[Outline provided September 2009]
The third stream movement, used as a term to describe the synthesis of jazz and classical music, seems to have been fifty years ahead of its time, with current trends such as post-minimalism, totalism and modern jazz adopting many of its ideologies. This research will look at the historical context of crossover trends, how they developed and were perceived by musicians in the past, and the implications for contemporary composers and performers. An investigation into the factors that influenced the emergence of third stream music and its elevation to being recognized in today’s music setting will be undertaken in this project.
